At the same time, I would like to salute and congratulate the many second language teachers across Canada who make heroic efforts to present a good program under difficult and sometimes even hostile conditions. Their commitment and competence are outstanding but often are not understood or appreciated. They deserve recognition and awards. So I accept this award in the name of all second language teachers who do the best we can to help students and the teaching profession.

I would like to thank CASLT who helped me a great deal, both professionally and personally. CASLT brings together so many dedicated teachers, administrators, teacher trainers and researchers. It is one of the few educational forums where researchers and teachers get to know one another and dialogue freely. This makes change possible and keeps practitioners in line with current research.

I had the great privilege of being part of the most recent change. The Canadian Teacher's Federation proposed a national study on Core French in 1983. We followed the progress of the National Core French Study for five years. During this time the provincial Representatives began to meet regularly. This was a great experience and one that continues through the support of CASLT. This regular contact led to formation of the "Group of 5" where representatives from five provinces worked together to develop a curriculum model. I sincerely thank Debbie Pineau, Nancy Pynch- Worthylake, Caterina Sotiriadis and Ghislaine Coutu-Vaillancourt for their cooperation and friendship. I'm pleased that this type of mutually beneficial collaboration is continuing, thanks to the vision and leadership of CASLT.

En recevant le rapport de l'Etude national sur le français de base, le groupe de 5 ont accepté le mandat d'incorporer les recommendations de l'etude dans un curriculum expérientiel et multidimensionnel. C'est à mesure qu'on avançait dans cette tâche qu'on a constaté jusqu'à quel point les rechercheurs ont bien fait leur travail. Le bon travail de Roger Tremblay, Raymond LeBlanc et les autres a beaucoup facilité notre tâche, et nous félicitons toute l'équipe de l'étude. Les curricula provinciaux se sont basés sur l'etude et 1'evolution normale
pourrait aboutir dans un curriculum national.


In our province, I would like to thank Saskatchewan Education's Official Minority Language Office where Stan Frey, Bev Anderson, Kathi Pugh, Patsy Hammond and our many workshoppers made my job easier and whose support was so important. I'm proud of the work they have done and I'm glad I was able to be involved. I would especially like to thank my family-my wife Kathy and four children- for their understanding and support.
