CASLT Encourages Teachers and Students to Participate in National French Language Week Activities
The Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers
(CASLT) once again joins its partners to celebrate National French Language Week as
part of Les Rendez-vous de la francophonie (5-21 March, 2010), organized by Fondation
Dialogue and now in it’s 12th year. Les Rendez-vous de la francophonie are two weeks
of cultural events and activities, which take place across the nation and highlight the
importance of French in our lives. One of the main events will be the International Day of

CASLT has created bursaries to increase accessibility for teachers requiring financial assistance to participate in quality professional development opportunities in order to enhance their teaching practice, linguistic skills and cultural knowledge. More information on the 2009-2010 bursaries is available here.

Variations francophones -
New Teaching Resource Showcases Vitality and Diversity of French Culture in Canada .
On July 21st 2008 in Quebec City, CASLT launched a new teaching resource: a special teacher's kit for FSL classrooms celebrating the diversity of francophone culture in Canada, which was co-produced with TV5 Quebec-Canada and the Organizing Committee of the World Congress of the Fédération internationale des professeurs de français. The kit includes a series of documentary television vignettes featuring interesting Canadian French speakers along with accompanying teacher materials for class discussion.
Hard copies of the kits will be available for teachers throughout the fall at various provincial language conferences when teachers participate in CASLT workshops. Symposium on Second Language Teacher Education: Assessment, Achievement and Advancement in Canada’s Official Languages.
Presented by the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics (CAAL) in partnership with the Society for the Promotion of the Teaching of English as a Second Language in Québec (SPEAQ) and the CASLT. This one day symposium is targeted to all Faculty Members, Instructors, and Learning Specialists involved in French Second Language and English Second Language Teacher Education. New CASLT Report: Effectiveness of Different FSL Delivery Models
CASLT has released a new report summarizing research on the effectiveness of different French as a Second Language (FSL) program delivery models in Canada. Representatives from provincial and territorial departments of education, teacher federations and language teacher associations took stock of the report in order to discuss ways of improving FSL programs in Canada, during the CASLT’s Annual Networking Day on September 26th, 2008 in Vancouver. News from the CASLT Annual General Meeting
The CASLT AGM took place on Thursday, September 25, 2008 in Vancouver, BC. CASLT welcomed special guest Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages, who delivered a speech at the event, and welcomed Caroline Turnbull (from New Brunswick) as new member of the Board of Directors. CASLT also gave out two prestigious awards:
-Jim Howden, a CASLT Past President a sessional instructor at l’Université du Québec à Montréal, was given the CASLT Robert Roy Award. The award is granted to individuals for their sustained contributions and long-term dedication towards the advancement of second teaching and learning. Mr. Howden is a leader in cooperative learning and English as a Second Language (ESL) education in Quebec.
-Senator Claudette Tardif was given the CASLT Honourary Lifetime Member Award.
Recipients of the award are often prominent individuals such as politicians, public
servants, media personalities, artists, and other leaders who are advancing second
language education through their work, their research or their private support. Senator Tardif has worked as a professor and Dean at the Faculté St-Jean of the University of Alberta and has written numerous publications in the fields of French immersion and teacher education. She is a strong advocate of linguistic duality in Canada.

In 2009, CASLT will host a national conference in partnership with the Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education, Edmonton Public Schools.
