Helen Coltrinari

Helen Coltrinari has been a teacher in both immersion and core French programs in Canada and in Europe (Canadian Forces Base, Baden-Sollingen Germany). In her diverse career, she has been a secondary school Department Head, an Executive Producer with TVOntario, an on-air host of several television series, a writer of teacher guides and classroom ready resources, a web content designer, a workshop presenter, a keynote speaker, a tour group leader, and a writer for Canadian publishing houses. In addition, she has designed and delivered television utilization workshops, short courses in multimedia, media literacy, and curricula for distance learning programs. Recent workshops include literacy, brain theory, differentiation, and cool web tools. Ms. Coltrinari holds an M.A. (French) from the University of Toronto and an M.Ed. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). As well as teaching courses for Brock University’s M.Ed program, she is a published author, a former member of an international team working with teachers in Brazil, and is awaiting the publication of a cookbook (working title - A Taste of Toronto: the history of Toronto through ethnic homecooking, Cormorant Books, 2010) She is a past president of the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT), the current President of French for the Future/le français pour l’avenir, the chair of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association (CPA) and assists with a wide variety of community projects. Most recently, a proposal she wrote for the CPA was awarded funds from the Trillium Fondation. Ms. Coltrinari currently manages her own educational consulting firm and lives in downtown Toronto.

Title of Workshop/Presentation: Best Practices in the FSL Classroom

Language of Delivery: English or français

Target Audience: Can be accepted for elementary to secondary teachers.

Session Description:
After a long career in FSL education, both in the classroom and in educational television, the presenter will lead participants through a shopping list of strategies for keeping students interested in language learning. The workshop is interactive and builds on the wealth of experience that the participants bring with them. And yes, there are handouts.

Preferred Length of Time: 2 hours

Title of Workshop/Presentation: Brain Snacks!

Language of Delivery: English with French activities

Target Audience: Beginner to Intermediate FSL teachers

Session Description: Why do we do what we do in class? What could we do better? How can we motivate and excite our students? This workshop focuses on applying recent brain theory research to the FSL classroom. Theory statements are linked to classroom activities that engage the student in meaningful work - experiences that their brains will enjoy!

Preferred Length of Time: 2 hours

Title of Workshop/Presentation: FAB! FUN! and FREE!

Language of Delivery: English

Target Audience: All FSL teachers

Session Description: This workshop presents a top 10 list of fun and out-of-the ordinary Web sites for FSL teachers. Although most are in English, the presenter will demonstrate how easily they can be adapted for use with students studying French. Easy as 1, 2, 3 in most cases.
If you bring your own laptop, you can explore online along with your colleagues… then use the site tomorrow in class – it’s that easy!
Note: presenter’s room must have access to high-speed internet.

Preferred Length of Time: 1 – 1 ½ hours

Title of Workshop/Presentation: Tech Tips and Tricks!

Language of Delivery: English

Target Audience: All FSL teachers

Session Description: Be no longer afraid of what’s “out there”. This web-based workshop visits a plethora of sites from Google tools to Wikis and demonstrates the wide variety of sites and how they can help you engage with your students….it’s where THEY live! Note: presenter’s room must have access to high-speed internet.

Length of Session: 1 – 1 ½ hours

Strand Identifying Keywords: Technology, internet, strategies/techniques.

Other Considerations: Data projector with sound capacity and screen; Internet access.

Title of Workshop/Presentation: I can’t find anything to read! Il n’y a rien à lire!

Language of Delivery: English with French activities

Target Audience: Beginner to Intermediate FSL teachers

Session Description: Research demonstrates over and over that the more we read, the better we get at reading! This workshop presents examples of easy-to-use reading resources with strategies to encourage reading, comprehension and oral communication in French. Using examples and new dialogues from TRALCO, the presenter also offers more than 20 literacy strategies. There are many practical ideas and handouts. Note: Most resources are available from TRALCO [www.tralco.com] and authored by the presenter, copyrighted to the presenter, and therefore usable in a workshop. The literacy strategies are generic and can be applied or adapted to any reading materials.

Length of Session: 2 – 2 ½ hours
