Developing language proficiency\, enhancing literacy competency\, and deepening understanding of critical social issues are some of the benefits. Yes\, you can do all this with just one book… if you choose a quality piece of literature as your anchor text! \nParticipants in this session will explore the process of designing connected literacy lessons through a model plan inspired by the award-winning picture book When We Were Alone (written by David A. Robertson and illustrated by Julie Flett). The story provides a gentle introduction to the history of residential schools that teaches students about Indigenous language\, culture\, and history; intergenerational storytelling; and family empowerment and strength. \nUsing the conceptual framework of pre–during–post reading stages and drawing on current research in second language pedagogies (Arnett & Bourgoin\, 2018; Bourgoin\, 2019; Gibbons\, 2015)\, this presentation will demonstrate a variety of literacy-based instructional strategies. Language and vocabulary acquisition\, oral fluency\, reading comprehension\, and descriptive writing are all targeted while exploring the significant themes of the text. \nParticipants will leave the session with a unit plan of connected lessons\, supporting documents\, and practical ideas that can be adapted for other children’s books and other topics of social relevance. This session will be of interest to teachers working with second language learners at multiple levels (elementary and beginner level secondary).

SUMMARY:Enjoying a Sense of Well-Being and Passion for Teaching: Finding Meaning (French)
DESCRIPTION:Teaching is a complex profession with constant challenges such as excessive workloads and emotional overload. The need to continually adapt to rapidly changing circumstances and needs can make it particularly difficult to ensure one’s daily well-being. And yet countless teachers\, despite having faced various obstacles while performing their job\, are still passionate and optimistic. This begs the question: how we can manage an ongoing emotional load while best adapting to the daily problems we encounter? How can we evoke a sense of well-being while teaching\, and what can we do to stay passionate while looking for meaning in our profession? How can we maximize our potential to persevere? This session will address the matter of well-being and passion among teachers. It will consider how to foster well-being in the workplace by highlighting the strengths and skills teachers can use to adopt a more positive outlook towards the various situations they face in academic environments. Lastly\, it will propose strategies to foster greater workplace motivation and support for a positive professional identity.

SUMMARY:Enjoying a Sense of Well-Being and Passion for Teaching: Finding Meaning (English)
DESCRIPTION:Teaching is a complex profession with constant challenges such as excessive workloads and emotional overload. The need to continually adapt to rapidly changing circumstances and needs can make it particularly difficult to ensure one’s daily well-being. And yet countless teachers\, despite having faced various obstacles while performing their job\, are still passionate and optimistic. This begs the question: how we can manage an ongoing emotional load while best adapting to the daily problems we encounter? How can we evoke a sense of well-being while teaching\, and what can we do to stay passionate while looking for meaning in our profession? How can we maximize our potential to persevere? This session will address the matter of well-being and passion among teachers. It will consider how to foster well-being in the workplace by highlighting the strengths and skills teachers can use to adopt a more positive outlook towards the various situations they face in academic environments. Lastly\, it will propose strategies to foster greater workplace motivation and support for a positive professional identity.
