DESCRIPTION:Canadian children’s literature can provide powerful opportunities for teachers to engage second language learners. Developing language proficiency\, enhancing literacy competency\, and deepening understanding of critical social issues are some of the benefits. Yes\, you can do all this with just one book… if you choose a quality piece of literature as your anchor text! \nParticipants in this session will explore the process of designing connected literacy lessons through a model plan inspired by the award-winning picture book When We Were Alone (written by David A. Robertson and illustrated by Julie Flett). The story provides a gentle introduction to the history of residential schools that teaches students about Indigenous language\, culture\, and history; intergenerational storytelling; and family empowerment and strength. \nUsing the conceptual framework of pre–during–post reading stages and drawing on current research in second language pedagogies (Arnett & Bourgoin\, 2018; Bourgoin\, 2019; Gibbons\, 2015)\, this presentation will demonstrate a variety of literacy-based instructional strategies. Developing language proficiency\, enhancing literacy competency\, and deepening understanding of critical social issues are some of the benefits. Yes\, you can do all this with just one book… if you choose a quality piece of literature as your anchor text! \nParticipants in this session will explore the process of designing connected literacy lessons through a model plan inspired by the award-winning picture book When We Were Alone (written by David A. Robertson and illustrated by Julie Flett). The story provides a gentle introduction to the history of residential schools that teaches students about Indigenous language\, culture\, and history; intergenerational storytelling; and family empowerment and strength. \nUsing the conceptual framework of pre–during–post reading stages and drawing on current research in second language pedagogies (Arnett & Bourgoin\, 2018; Bourgoin\, 2019; Gibbons\, 2015)\, this presentation will demonstrate a variety of literacy-based instructional strategies. How can we evoke a sense of well-being while teaching\, and what can we do to stay passionate while looking for meaning in our profession? How can we maximize our potential to persevere? This session will address the matter of well-being and passion among teachers. It will consider how to foster well-being in the workplace by highlighting the strengths and skills teachers can use to adopt a more positive outlook towards the various situations they face in academic environments. Lastly\, it will propose strategies to foster greater workplace motivation and support for a positive professional identity.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Languages Without Borders 2020
DESCRIPTION:On October 23 and 24\, 2020\, CASLT and the British Columbia Association of Teachers of Modern Languages (BCATML) co-hosted Celebrating Languages Without Borders (CLWB). Due to pandemic restrictions\, the conference took place online\, offering even greater opportunities for participation without the logistical barriers of geography or time. Over 600 second language educators and stakeholders attended over 100 high-quality presentations and workshops. Online networking opportunities and a virtual trade show enabled participants to share information\, exchange ideas\, and learn about new resources. \nSome sessions were recorded and are now available on the CASLT Learning Centre.

The main theme of the mini meets explored how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted students’ language acquisition and led to innovation in teaching. The final part of the event gathered all participants for a 50th anniversary celebration for CASLT.

The AGM also saw the election of a new board member and the introduction of a new National Council member. \nThe AGM was followed by CASLT’s 2020 Networking Day.
