The Pathways to Success Community of Practice is a cornerstone initiative of CASLT’s national project supporting internationally trained teachers (ITTs) and the administrators who work with them. This project addresses the unique opportunities and challenges experienced by ITTs as they integrate into Canada’s school communities.

Through shared learning, professional dialogue, and collaboration, our Community of Practice pilot program is designed to connect ITTs and their supporters across Canada to build resources, relationships, and inclusive strategies.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from:

  • Internationally Trained Language Teachers: Language teachers (of French, English, or other languages) who completed their teacher education abroad and are currently working, or preparing to work, in the Canadian school system.
  • Administrators: School and district administrators involved in the recruitment, onboarding, or ongoing support of ITTs.

Community Values

By joining this community of practice, members commit to upholding our foundational values:

  • Collaboration: Actively share, learn, and grow together.
  • Respect: Recognize and value diverse experiences and perspectives.
  • Inclusion: Ensure that all voices are welcome and supported.
  • Beneficence: Express a spirit of thoughtful goodwill and a proactive, caring approach to others. In our community, beneficence means looking out for one another, providing support, and addressing challenges with understanding and care. It goes beyond simple kindness, representing an active commitment to mutual well-being.
  • Confidentiality: Respect and protect the privacy of all discussions and shared experiences within the group.

Participation Commitments

To build a vibrant and sustained learning community, members agree to the following commitments:

At the Start (November 2025)

  • Introduce yourself in the CASLT CoLab group thread.
  • Connect directly with two other members (by name) via a message, reply, or forum interaction.
  • Read and accept the community’s values.
  • Attend a live meet-and-greet session: To help build connections and put faces to names, participation in at least one of our live virtual meet-and-greet sessions is mandatory for all members of the pilot. These sessions are intended to be informal and welcoming. Come as you are, share, listen, and start getting to know your fellow community members! Details and login information will be sent by email in advance. Session options:
    • Session 1: November 20, 2025, 7:00–8:00 p.m. ET
    • Session 2: November 25, 2025, 7:00–8:00 p.m. ET

Ongoing Engagement (November 2025–March 2026)

  • Participate in at least one activity or discussion per month (e.g., responding to discussion threads, podcast prompts, resource sharing, or collaborative sessions)
  • Take part in at least one collaborative activity (see below)

At the End (March 2026)

  • Complete a short evaluation survey.
  • Submit a brief written reflection.

Collaborative Activities

Members will fulfill their collaboration requirement by participating in at least one of the following:

  • Facilitator-led activities (e.g., micro-workshops, co-development circles, or sharing circles) scheduled throughout the pilot.
  • Peer-led activities (e.g., self-organized reading group, resource-building project, informal problem-solving session). Participants who take part in a peer-led collaboration will provide a brief report (template provided).

Details for both options, including schedules and reporting instructions, will be shared in the CASLT CoLab group.
