Keynote Workshop
Beyond the Bot: Language Teaching and Learning in a Postplagiarism World
Presented by Dr. Sarah Elaine Eaton
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can produce grammatically correct sentences in a myriad of languages. What it cannot replicate is the human experience of acquiring a language: the cognitive growth, the cultural competency, and the communicative agility that develop through genuine practice. Postplagiarism offers a way to rethink academic integrity and language learning in an age when AI is woven into everyday teaching, learning, and creation.
The postplagiarism framework invites educators to shift their focus from detecting misconduct to foregrounding ethics, equity, value-driven learning, and responsible hybrid human–AI creation. It encourages educators to look for evidence of learning, thoughtful attribution, critical thinking, and the ethical use of AI tools. This interactive keynote workshop will explore the postplagiarism framework in the context of additional language education, inviting participants to think critically about the evolving role of AI in their classrooms. Through guided reflection and discussion, participants will engage with these ideas and reflect on their own values and teaching practice.
Interactive Panel Session
AI in Language Education: Balancing Potential and Risk
A Structured Panel and Conversation
Panelists: Wei Cai, Stephanie Jackson, Anne-Marie Sénécal
Moderator: Marc-Albert Paquette
How can language educators harness AI to support teaching and learning without losing sight of the risks, limitations, and ethical challenges it brings? This session brings together diverse voices from across language education to examine both the possibilities and the challenges AI presents in the language classroom.
Through a structured format that will weave small-group dialogue with panelists’ reflections and reactions, participants will engage directly with colleagues to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build professional connections. The conversation will highlight how AI can support planning, instruction, and learner engagement, while also addressing critical considerations related to equity, ethics, assessment, and professional judgment. Participants will leave with practical, classroom-ready strategies as well as broader insights to help them critically navigate the evolving role of AI in language education.
