The Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) is launching a new pan‑Canadian project, funded by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), to develop multimodal pedagogical resources that support student engagement, motivation, and perseverance in secondary French as a second language (FSL) programs (with a particular focus on Core French).

We are seeking six practicing or recently practicing secondary FSL teachers for a working group to help shape, review, and validate these resources.

General Profile

We invite applications from educators who:

  • Have current or very recent experience teaching secondary Core French (ideally grades 7–12)
  • Bring a strong understanding of student engagement and motivation in secondary FSL, including challenges and promising classroom practices
  • Are comfortable collaborating with colleagues from across Canada and providing and/or receiving constructive feedback
  • Are committed to inclusive, equitable, and accessible FSL learning environments and resources

Applicants may indicate interest in one or both roles (writing team and/or working group).

Working Group Member

Overview

Working group members will help shape the project by identifying classroom needs and priorities, advising on the best types of modules, themes, and supports, and validating the emerging concept. They will also pilot draft modules in real or representative contexts and provide detailed feedback to guide revisions so that the final resources are practical, engaging, and responsive to secondary Core French realities.

We aim for a working group that represents a range of provinces and territories, secondary Core French contexts, and diverse school settings (e.g., rural/urban, different board types, varied student populations).

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in early consultations to describe classroom realities, resource needs, and engagement challenges in secondary Core French
  • Provide guidance on what kinds of modules, themes, and supports would be most useful and impactful in their contexts
  • Review and comment on analyses of existing resources and the proposed concept and themes for the new resource
  • Pilot selected draft modules in their own classrooms or with colleagues and provide feedback on feasibility, clarity, and impact on student engagement
Additional Assets

The following are not required but will be considered strong assets for selection:

  • Prior experience serving on committees, advisory groups, or collaborative projects (at the school, board, provincial, or national level)
  • Experience contributing to pilot projects or providing structured feedback on resources or initiatives
  • Engagement in professional learning communities or networks related to FSL.

Working group members should have at least intermediate proficiency in French; we particularly welcome Core French teachers who may not consider themselves “perfectly bilingual” but can contribute practical classroom insights.

Commitment
  • Three virtual meetings between April and December 2026 (needs/inventory, draft modules, pilot debrief)
  • Additional time to review documents and pilot modules (flexible and scheduled in collaboration with participants)
Compensation
  • Honoraria of $900
