CASLT Event Description
Inclusive pedagogy focuses on students’ evolving identities and language acquisition needs. It reflects both authentic and action-oriented learning of French as a second/additional language. Through a broader definition of the term “text,” this teaching practice values the spiral of language acquisition. It prioritizes oral communication, which is then linked directly to reading and writing in context, in order to implement anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and anti-colonial teaching practices.
This workshop is designed for FSL teachers and administrators. It will aim to bridge educational theory and practice through concrete examples of pedagogical scenarios.

Heather Norton
Heather Norton has been a teacher with the Peel District School Board for 16 years, following 9 years with the Toronto District School Board. Born in Ontario, she holds a Bachelor of Music in French (1996) from Western University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto (1997). She was formerly an assistant teacher and educational consultant for the Peel District School Board. She teaches music and core French at Jean Augustine High School in Brampton and is a TV5Monde certified trainer and DELF trainer.
During her career, Heather has developed collaborative projects between teachers of families in various schools with the goal of supporting the transition of grade 8 and 9 students into the Core French program. She has collaborated with Sylvia Moll, Pedagogical Coordinator, in the development of pedagogical sessions for the Grade 9 and 10 Core French courses. Currently, she is collaborating with the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) coordinator to develop a mentoring program for French as a Second Language (FSL) teachers.
Sylvia Moll
Sylvia Moll is the French as a Second Language (FSL) and International Languages Coordinator for Grades 1 to 12 with the Peel District School Board. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature from McGill University, a Master of Arts in History from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She taught French Immersion and Core French for 20 years before becoming an educational consultant and then an educational coordinator and trainer for DELF and TV5Monde.
In recent years, Sylvia has created teams of teachers who co-facilitate French workshops for all three FSL programs with her and adopt anti-oppressive teaching and assessment practices that value the student as language learner. Sylvia collaborates with several language professionals and recently created pedagogical sessions for the Grade 9 and 10 French curriculum with high school teacher Heather Norton. Sylvia has also received a grant from the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) for literacy development in French Immersion. She is involved with the Ministry of Education’s FSL teacher recruitment and retention strategy and facilitates Canadian job fairs for academics in France. She is currently working on the creation of a mentoring program for FSL teachers with the coordinator of the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP).
